Overview

Ripley’s Aquarium, which opened in October, 2013 in Toronto, Ontario is Canada’s largest aquarium and is projected to host millions of visitors. Ripley’s is home to more than 16,000 aquatic animals including fan favorites such as sharks, jelly fish, sting rays, green sea turtles and many more inhabiting nearly six million litres of water.

Problem

As a major tourist attraction, the aesthetic appeal in both back and front of house areas was an extremely important consideration. These areas, as well as the diver platforms, are always in contact with water. The customer required a solution to prevent not only slips and falls, but also the corrosive effects of salt water while maintaining a visually attractive environment.

Solution

Fibergrate, a division of StonCor Group, was chosen for this project due to the complexity, project size and shipping deadlines. Fibergrate’s Design Centre Team incorporated the design, drafting and engineering and were more than capable of taking on this challenging project.

Over 7,200 square feet of Fibergrate's Molded Grating with structural support for platforms, were installed. Diver access platforms supported by FRP structural components were used offering a combination of durability, strength and visual aesthetics.

Fibergrate was the ideal choice for Ripley’s Aquarium as its FRP solution is unaffected by moisture, humidity and salt water. FRP products are completely corrosion-proof and built to last offering the long term solution they required.
